On the 12th of March 2010, Ryan Tubridy, the genial host of RTÉ's The Late Late Show - the world's longest running chat show - introduced Crystal Swing to the Irish nation. He explained how the family band had been completely unknown only two weeks previously but due to the popularity of their YouTube performance of the song, 'He Drinks Tequila' they had become an internet sensation attracting over a quarter of a million views from all around the world in just a few days.
Having bestowed the moniker, 'Midleton's biggest musical export' on the band, Ryan cued the performance and then the studio and a million households across the land filled with the sound of Crystal Swing belting out the track that made them famous much to the delight of the host and studio audience.
Following the performance Ryan brought the trio to the celebrated chairs for a chat about their sudden rise to fame. The ensuing warm and friendly conversation resulted in Ryan asking Derek if he would perform 'The Hucklebuck'. Honoured at the prospect and backed by the acclaimed Late Late Show house band, Derek launched into an exuberant rendition of the 60's showband hit, moving amongst the audience who really got into the spirit of the performance and showed their appreciation at the end with a huge and sustained round of applause.
Having clearly enjoyed the performance, the gracious host complimented his guests and predicted great things lay ahead for them.
Fast forward two months to the 21st May 2010. Having travelled thousands of air and land miles, appeared on scores of television and radio shows, filled pages of newsprint, generated endless hours of online activity and played tens of sell out shows since their first appearance, Crystal Swing are back in The Late Late Show studio with Ryan performing their brand new single, 'The Hucklebuck'. Even Ryan doesn't escape as Derek gets him out of his chair to dance the famous steps.
